Naming school for Ellen Garrison ‘a no-brainer’

April 24, 2024

Concord’s list of prominent notables is long and distinguished — with many reputations stretching far beyond the bounds of Massachusetts. We take pride and inspiration in their legacies. This is no less true of Ellen Garrison, born a Concordian, whose significant intellectual achievements and influence extended nationwide. Should a school be named in her name?

All of the town of Concord’s named schools, buildings, and other sites remind us of accomplished individuals in varied fields — however all are white. But this is 2024. Times are evolving as renewed awareness of American cultural and social diversity is recognized for its longstanding and inherent vitality. Something I — an immigrant — and numerous others take pride in valuing. Concord’s demographic profile reminds us, too, that 15% are non-white.

Naming the middle school in Ellen Garrison’s honor — skin color aside — is a no-brainer.
