Library Corner: Summer reading is for all ages!

Patrons of all ages can now sign up at the Main Library or the Fowler Branch Library for the Summer Reading Program. Complete challenges, enjoy scavenger hunts, win prizes, and read! Visit concordlibrary.org for more information about the specific programs for each age group.

Both Library locations will be closed for the July 4 holiday. 

All Ages

“Knitters’ Workshop” Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. — Stop by the Workshop at the Main Library every Thursday morning for a cup of coffee and two hours of informal, self-guided knitting with fellow Concord crafters! Needles and yarn scrap swap available for new knitters. All ages and experience are welcome. No registration required.

“Sustainable Makes: Beeswax Food Wraps” Saturday, July 8, 2 p.m. — Replace that box of cling wrap with hand-crafted reusable fabric and beeswax food wraps! Recommended for ages 12-112. Program will take place at the Workshop in the Main Library.

Adult Programs

“Films at Fowler: The Miracle at Morgan’s Creek” Wednesday, July 5, 7 p.m. — Join other film buffs for a discussion of The Miracle at Morgan’s Creek (1944)! This film is part of the summer “Films at Fowler” series examining the pleasures, problems, and pitfalls of belonging to a family, whether conventional or unconventional. Watch the film before the discussion on Kanopy (a free video streaming service for Concord patrons). Please note that the “Films at Fowler” discussions now take place virtually. “Papercut Workshop with Multimedia Artist Zhonghe (Elena) Li” Thursday, July 13, 4 p.m. — To accompany her July exhibition of papercuts and watercolors at the Main Library Gallery, multimedia artist Zhonghe (Elena) Lu will lead a traditional Chinese papercutting workshop in the Goodwin Forum at the Main Library. Learn about the aesthetics and philosophy of this ancient art form, and then create your own piece!

“Writer-In-Residence George Jreije Joins Fowler Afternoon Tea Book Club” Friday, July 21, 2 p.m. — Writer-In-Residence George Jreije joins the Fowler Afternoon Tea Book Club for tea and to discuss his book, Shah Hadid and the Alchemists of Alexandria, and answer questions about his book or the writing process.

Teen Programs

 “CCHS Chess Club” Saturday, July 8, 11:30 a.m. — Play chess with the CCHS Weekend Chess Club! Ages 11-18, from beginners to experts. Program takes place in the Teen Lounge at the Main Library. No registration required.

Children’s Programs

“Craft Lab at Fowler” Wednesdays at 4 p.m. — Drop by the Fowler Branch Library to craft, experiment, and create during this weekly hands-on artistic exploration program. Ages 12 and under. No registration required.

“Playful Engineers: Chain Reactions and Creative Contraptions” Thursday, July 13, 10:30 a.m. — Join teaching artist Jay for a hands-on event where participants will design, build, test, and play with Rube Goldberg machines. Explore force and motion, scale, and cause and effect. Come on time for the demonstration, and then build! Recommended for ages 6+. Program will take place at the Main Library. No registration required.
