Sue (Shelly) Jewell, 82

August 31, 2023

Sue (Shelly) Jewell, 82, of Concord, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2023.

She was born on February 7, 1941, to Charles J. Shelly, and Fern A. Shelly of Ohio.

Sue grew up in Zanesville, Ohio and left there to go to Denison University to get her BA in History. She then attended Katharine Gibbs School, and became a secretary in Boston’s Financial district.

She met and married Pliny Jewell III of Concord, MA in 1967. They lived in Concord until 1980, when they moved to their beloved farmhouse, Red Gate Farm, in Carlisle.

Sue worked alongside her husband at their landscape architecture and contracting company, Pliny Jewell Associates, as bookkeeper and secretary until they retired in 1993.

Sue was passionate about everything to do with gardens. She spent many happy hours planning for and digging in her own in Carlisle, and at their summer residence at the Ausable Club in Keene Valley, NY. It was the way she connected with many other like minded friends. She and Pliny were also members at the Yeamans Hall Club in Hanahan, South Carolina, and the Concord Country Club.

Throughout her life Sue read voraciously, golfed, played the odd game of bridge, and always had a project of knitting or needlepoint in progress. She shared these skills with any one, child or adult who wished to learn or needed help. She loved watching birds and animals where ever she was. She enjoyed playing piano and attending the BSO. Sue had a dry wit, was a gracious hostess, and a marvelous cook, always crediting her husband with teaching her how, after she attempted giving him Minute Rice early on in their marriage.

Sue and Pliny moved to Newbury Court in Concord, in 2017. She became a resident of The Gardens in 2022.

She is survived by her husband Pliny Jewell III, her daughter Abigail Jewell (Dave Donati) and grandchildren Rachel, Dante and Sophia, and by her step daughter Lucinda Jewell and granddaughter Belinda Donohoe, and step son Pliny (Ruth) Jewell IV, and grandchildren Lily and Anna. Predeceased by her sister MaryAnn Ballard, of Indiana, PA.

A memorial service will be at a later date. Interment will be private at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Sue’s memory may be made to Mass Audubon Society, 208 South Great Road, Lincoln, MA 01773.

Arrangements are entrusted to Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.  For Sue’s online guestbook, visit www.DeeFuneralHome.com.
