With Sudbury River waters rising, the town shut down part of Nashawtuc Road Thursday afternoon to keep traffic off the bridge.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation advised Concord to make the move as a precautionary measure after the Sudbury River reached levels that could potentially affect the stability of the bridge’s lower structure, said town Communications Manager Donna McIntosh.
The closure affects Nashawtuc Road between Main Street and Musketaquid Road. Traffic will be rerouted via Main Street, Elm Street, Simon Willard Road and Musketaquid until the bridge is cleared for travel.
The bridge will be reopened after the water level subsides — and an underwater inspection by MassDOT ensures it’s safe. The reopening timeline wasn’t immediately clear Thursday afternoon, McIntosh said.
Areas of the Commonwealth received as much as four inches of rain this week on the heels of the first major winter storm of 2024, which dropped 10 inches of snow on Concord over the weekend.
With another storm in the forecast for Friday, most of Massachusetts remains under flood watch through Saturday evening.
