Remo “Roy” G. Sodano, 97

January 31, 2024

Remo “Roy” G. Sodano, long-time resident of Concord, passed away on Sunday, January 21, 2024 just a few days after celebrating his 97th birthday with his family.

Roy was born in Canton, Massachusetts, on January 16, 1927, the son of Paul and Victoria (Travastino) Sodano. The family moved to Somerville, where Roy attended Somerville High School. There, he met Mary Micheli, who became the love of his life.

With the U.S.’s entry into World War II, Roy enlisted in the Navy, proudly serving in the Seabees in Guam. Upon his return home, Roy attended the Stockbridge School of Agriculture, but after deciding farm living was not the life for him, he studied to be a dental technician (custom-crafter of dentures, bridges, etc).

Roy and Mary were married in 1952, and over the next decade, they welcomed two sons, Paul and Larry, and settled in Concord. Roy launched Concord Dental Labs in partnership with his good friend Carl Torossian. Roy and Carl’s friendship was mirrored by that of their wives, and for decades, the four of them were a merry quartet. Roy and Mary were avid square dancers, which led to many treasured friendships. His bowling team, golf friends, and Wednesday lunch group were also sources of camaraderie over the years. Roy made connections everywhere he went.

Roy enjoyed many hobbies, including woodworking, painting, raising orchids (at which he excelled), gardening, backyard birding, and fixing/repurposing things so that nothing would ever go to waste. As an adult, he took up hiking and brought his young sons on many weekend adventures in the White Mountains. Later in life, he loved helping his sons with their home improvement projects.

Roy is survived by his son Larry S. Sodano, daughter-in-law Betsy Ginsberg of Medford, and daughter-in-law Mary Sodano of Lexington. He is predeceased by his wife Mary, who passed away in 2001 after almost 50 years of marriage; their son Paul J. Sodano, who died in 2022; and by his three sisters Laura Snay (Harold), Wilma Doyle (Jack), and Edna Bailey (Royce), and by Mary’s cousin Rita Cuneo, who was like a sister. He also leaves three adoring grandchildren: Michael, Adam, and Laura Sodano, many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and their spouses and children, as well as Rita’s extended family.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate Roy on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at 12:00 noon in Duvall Chapel at Newbury Court, 80 Deaconess Rd., Concord. At a later date, a Catholic Mass will be said for Roy. His ashes will be buried next to those of his late wife, Mary, at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in a private ceremony.
