Swimming and Diving hosted the Dual County League championships and the girls team won the title. The boys team finished third overall but were first in the DCL Thorpe Division.
The girls’ meet took place on Saturday, February 3, and 115 of the 123 swims were the season’s best times.
The Patriots had two girls win all their events: Alana Leen (’24) and Elisabeth Reiling (’27) were both in the winning 200 Medley Relay (school record 1:49.07) and the 200 Free Relay (another school record, 1:40.42). Leen also won the 200 IM and the 100 back. Reiling also won the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. Also on the 200 Medley Relay team were Ainsley Haut (’24) and Reese Phillips (’25). Phillips was also on the 200 Free Relay team, along with Tess Ward (“24). Maisie O’Donnell (’25) won the diving competition. Bea Turrentini (’26) won the 500-yard freestyle.
For the boys, diver Thomas Stone (’25) finished in second place.
“It was a great weekend,” said Head Coach Matt Goldberg. “We had many new sectional and state qualifiers for both the boys’ and girls’ teams.”
Wrestling had its last home match on January 31 against Waltham and defeated the Hawks 43-30 on Senior Night. The five seniors honored were Gregory Bellegarde, David Miragias, Seamus Rudolph, Henry Evins-McKenzie and Kian Amouzgar.
Kian won his match at 175 pounds with a pin at 1:20. Another big win for the Patriots was by Penn Bogar (’27) who wrestles at 106 pounds. Waltham did not have a wrestler for the class, so Bogar moved up to wrestle a 113-pound Hawk — and won by pin at 1:09.
“It is better to wrestle than forfeit at this date in the season,” said Head Coach Craig Carpenter as he explained why Bogar moved up a weight class. “Waltham didn’t have a wrestler at 109 and we didn’t have a wrestler at 113.”
Indoor Track and Field had its last regular season meet of the season. The boys and girls teams both ran unopposed as the scheduled opponent, Newton South, could not be at the meet due to the district’s teacher strike.
Despite running unopposed, all time and personal records counted, and both teams recorded some: For the boys in the shot put, both Robert Blair and Gordon Hall; in the hurdles, Myles Lawton and Seiji Ma; in the 100-yard dash, Brendan Joyce, Mateo Pimenta, Mark Johnson, and Richard Blair; in the mile, Sawyer Bout, Rex Riessen, Alexan Rivier and William Hawes; in the 1000m, Oliver Dayton, Ryan Perry, and Braeden Quayle; in the 600, Oliver Dayton; in the 300, Brendan Joyce, Gordon Hall, Myles Lawton, Ian Lin, Harry Crowley & Seiji Ma; in the 2-mile, Thomas Rivier, Brendan Quinn, and Andre Haddad. The boys’ 4×200 (Zion Atkinson, Elyjah Ramos, Mateo Pimenta and Cesar Hernandez) ran a season’s best.
For the girls: in the shot put, Alissa Bono; in the long jump, Claire Beckley and Grace Garofalo; in the mile, Pellin Turner at 5:27.19 and Maria Chopas at 5:27.89 to improve their State Qualifiers; in the 1000, Isabell Crowell and Emerson Wright. In the hurdles, Nina Zinke, Sara Campagna, and Lauren Zipoli ran an 8.78 to improve her state Qualifier; in the 100-yard dash, Paloma Wigton, Tricia Cronin, Grace Garofalo and Emma Wonsey; in the 300 yards, Zeina Fofana in 43.93 and Claire Beckley in 44.09, improving their state Qualifiers.
Both boys and girls will compete on Sunday, February 11 in the DCL championship meet at the track at the New Balance Boston Landing Track and Field facility.
Alpine Skiing raced on February 1 in a tri-meet with Notre Dame Academy and Bedford. The women entered the race with a chance of securing the fourth seed for team playoffs taking place on February 8. The men, currently in third place, were hoping to win both races and pile up their points. With the current 1, 2 and 4 seeds all pitted against each other in a tri-meet, CCHS had a chance of finishing the regular season in any of the top four spots with a good showing.
The women secured fourth place, ending the regular season with a 4-3 record after defeating Bedford (64-27) and Notre Dame Academy (64-0). Delaney Remington (’25) in second, Juniper Flint (’27) in 10th, Bella Audette (’26) in 13th, Amanda Reynolds (’24) in 22nd, Siena Triola (’24) in 36th, and Maddie Clancy (’26) in 37th brought home the points for the Patriots. Rookies Kat Field ’27 and Phoebe Solar ’27 were solid in their first Slalom races. Tara Johnson ’24, Elise McMorrow ’26, Sierra Fonte ’26, Natalie Barrett ’24, Julia Leary ’26, Nadia Minkin ’26, and Sophia Annunziata ’26 also skied the course.
For the men, five men finished in the top 10, with the sixth in 20th place. Theo Remington ’26 took 3rd followed closely by Henry Flint ’25 in 5th. Sophomores Tucker Kuftinec and Jamie Poole both had their first top-10 finishes in their high school careers coming in 7th and 8th respectively. Drew Callen ’24 got back into the swing of things with a 10th-place finish followed by the ever-steady Harry Nerrow ’24 in 20th. These finishes not only gave the men wins against Bedford (57-34) and Notre Dame Academy (64-0) but also earned enough points to catapult them into the regular season title. Winchester, Lincoln-Sudbury, and CCHS all ended with a 6-1 record, but CC ended up on top of the total points tiebreaker by 10 points.
The next tier of racers also had strong finishes with Sam Snell ’25, Will Redmond ’26, and Jakab Renyi ’26 finishing 22nd, 23rd, and 25th. Finn Ruhman ’26, Jack Nugent ’25, and James Reynolds ’26 put in solid races. Henri Legault ’25 improved his previous personal record by eight seconds. Finally, Max Poulsson ’26 and Kai Biddle ’25 had a blast in their first high school races.
On to the league playoffs next week: The women will face off against #1 seed Lincoln-Sudbury while the men will battle #4 Weston in a giant slalom race.
Nordic Ski teams both won on January 30. The boys finished with 466 points, ahead of Acton-Boxborough with 458 and Wayland with 448. Sophomore Adam Synnestvedt won his first league race. Freshman Zach Scopinich-Burgel was second. Senior Captain Penn Rogers finished fifth.
It was the longest race to date, at 6.5km skied under blizzard-like conditions at Weston Ski Track with the snow guns blowing throughout the race.
The girls won with 443 points, followed by Winchester with 435 and Acton-Boxborough with 429. Sarah Kirincich and Katie Pohlig finished second and third. Uma Sumnotra finished 11th for the Patriots.
