Wrestling finished third out of 13 teams at sectionals, with athletes advancing to the state tournament at Newton South High School on February 16 and 17.
“We had a good day at Sectionals,” said Head Coach Craig Carpenter. “Six of our wrestlers qualified for the state tournament.”
Penn Bogar advanced to the finals and lost a close, competitive match 6-3 at 106 pounds. He finished second and qualified for the state tournament as a freshman.
At 120 pounds, Grady Snarr was seeded #2 and pinned the #1 seed in the finals to win the tournament, avenging an earlier season loss to Belmont. This was Grady’s first career tournament win.
At 138 pounds, Miles Mattaliano was seeded #1 and won the tournament, pinning everyone he faced.
Kyle Amouzgar placed sixth at 144 pounds, wrestling well but narrowly missing out on the state tournament.
At 165 pounds, Eddie Myles finished in second behind a tough Brookline wrestler, having pinned everyone else he faced.
Kian Amouzgar was seeded #1 at 175 pounds and pinned/tech fell everyone he wrestled on the day.
At 215 pounds Lorenzo Boschi was unseeded but had a great day and finished in fourth place, qualifying for states.
Gymnastics competed in the Dual County League Championship on February 8 and finished fourth with a 124.8 score. Acton-Boxborough won with 140.95. The Patriots had a solid showing considering the team has not been at full strength due to athlete illnesses. Catie Haslam was sixth in All Around and Alice Hepworth was eighth on the vault. Abby Marano, Isabella Calisi, and Tess Stewart were joined by Isabella Pulselli and Izzy Brassil from Waltham to form the co-op team.
Fencing had its last meet before States on February 10 at Brook Charter School. They men’s team won all three matches, defeating Brook 20-7, Bishop Feehan 19-8 and Boston Latin 18-9. The men won all three weapons, foil, epee, and saber, in each match. Aedin Lai, James Feinberg, Azlan Shahzad went undefeated. Two others, Daniel Shin and Omar Siala (with limited action) also went undefeated.
The women suffered three defeats, losing 13-11 to Brook, 18-9 to Bishop Feehan and 20-7 to Boston Latin.
