We can think more broadly about middle school naming

April 25, 2024

I cannot speak for today’s middle school students, but it gives me great pleasure to be able to say I went to Booker T. Washington Junior High School. (It was always “Booker T. Washington,” never just “Washington,” when I was a student there.)

The school had another name as well: JHS 54.

For those who are concerned that we will somehow “lose” the identity of CMS if we give it the name of an admirable daughter of Concord, CMS was CMS when I had a child in Sanborn and another in Peabody two decades ago.

Human beings are not so limited that we can only imagine one name for a thing at a time.
